Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to find out the status of substance abuse and knowledge and attitude about substance abuse of adolescents in Gwangju.

Methods: Data was collected from 869 adolescents(middles and high school students) with self-completing questionnaire in October, 2005.

Results: The mean score of smoking knowledge were 18.20 in middle school students, and 18.06 in high school students. The mean score of positive attitude on smoking were 19.41 in middle school students, and 20.26 in high school students. The mean score of negative attitude on smoking were 35.91 in middle school students, and 35.91 in high school students. The mean score of drinking knowledge were 15.21 in middle school students, and 15.11 in high school students. The mean score of positive attitude on drinking were 14.91 in middle school students, and 16.31 in high school students. The mean score of negative attitude on drinking were 21.39 in middle school students, and 18.98 in high school students.

Conclusions: The results showed that the substance abuse prevention program to improve knowledge and attitude about substance abuse should be conducted from primary school, because substance abuse begining time was lower aging more and more.
